Who becomes a CHRS Student Research Fellow?

CHRS Student Research Fellows are select students in the MHRM program who spend a year working on current issues with an executive or an HR team from a CHRS member company.

What are the prerequisites to become a CHRS Student Research Fellow?

Although no HR experience is necessary, students must be enrolled in at least 6 credits in the Rutgers MHRM program before they can apply to become CHRS Student Research Fellows. Candidates must have outstanding written and oral communication skills.

How can I apply to become a CHRS Student Research Fellow?

The general application process is outlined below:

  • 1. You must currently be enrolled in the Rutgers University MHRM program to become a CHRS Student Research Fellow.
  • 2. If you are interested in becoming a CHRS Student Research Fellow you will need to apply online. The online application also requires a short video interview that can be scheduled by contacting Janice DiLella at 732-445-5975.
  • 3. You will then be notified throughout the year via messages to your Rutgers email account when potential CHRS Student Research Fellows opportunities become available.
  • 4. If the given opportunity is one in which you are interested, you will "activate" your application for that specific opportunity.
  • 5. You may be interviewed for the given CHRS Student Research Fellow opportunity and will be notified if you have been selected.
  • 6. If you were not selected, you are welcome to activate your application for future opportunities.
After being assigned to a specific company, what tasks do CHRS Student Research Fellows complete?

Once CHRS Student Research Fellows are assigned to an executive or HR team of a CHRS member company, they conduct action-oriented research (which may include literature searches, written summaries of best practices, surveys, interviews and the like).

If I become a CHRS Student Research Fellow, will I receive course credit for my work?

Yes. MHRM Students will receive between 1 and 3 elective course credits for their involvement in the program depending on the scale of the project.

Will I be allowed to take a vacation for Winter and Spring school breaks when participating in the Research Fellows Program?

The participating CHRS member companies have always been very flexible with school breaks and exam schedules. They realize that CHRS Student Research Fellows are students first — with student schedules and obligations (such as other coursework, jobs, and exams). You are advised to work with your company advisor to discuss a mutually acceptable timeline to complete your project work comfortably while juggling your MHRM coursework and your personal life.

Do many companies require CHRS Student Research Fellows to travel frequently in the U.S. or abroad?

It depends on the project and the company. If you do not want to travel, you can simply not apply for a given opportunity which requires travel.

What are the curriculum or course requirements for the CHRS fellowship course?

CHRS Student Research Fellows will be expected to meet to discuss the progress of their projects and work on skill-building, project management, etc. with the CHRS Director, Professor Paula Caligiuri.

Since I will receive course credit, how will the course be graded?

There will be no exams. Your grade will be co-determined by the CHRS Director and the company advisor with whom you have worked for your project.
